Does Alcohol Help You Sleep?

Alcohol does allow healthy people to fall asleep quicker and sleep more deeply for awhile, but it reduces REM sleep. The more you drink before bed the more pronounced these effects will be. When you try to sleep without the alcohol, you may have difficulties for 7-14 days. This is a common withdrawal symptom and one that many times causes relapse.
